As part of this month’s GameInformer exclusives, they discussed the new Toy Box games that will be coming in Disney Infinity 3.0 – Toy Box Speedway & Toy Box Takeover.
Interestingly, whilst both games have been developed with the same engine used for the Toy Box, an average Disney Infinity player would not be able to re-create these games. When compared to the Toy Box games in 2.0 Escape from the Kyln & Assault on Asgard which were built entirely using the in-game creation tools, the 3.0 games offer a refined user experience. They will be available as separate Toy Box game discs and only playable with the Disney Infinity 3.0 game software.
So, what makes Toy Box Takeover so different?
Originally, Toy Box Takeover was named Villain Takeover and the game draws inspiration from various dungeon crawlers such as Diablo. This was the aim with Disney Infinity 2.0’s Toy Box game ‘Escape from the Kyln’ however it was a disappointing experience.
“We just didn’t feel like we hit the mark qualitatively,” says John Blackburn, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Infinity at Avalanche Software. “When we were starting development of those, we underestimated how much you needed to change the mechanics to tune them for those games.”
Whilst Escape from the Kyln had begun to open up a world of new possibilities for Disney Infinity games of the future, there were still various backend issues which was unchanged.
As GameInformer have discussed here:
Two of the Kyln’s biggest problems were that, enemies still took the same amount of damage, and when the player took damage, the amount of knockback was unchanged.
These issues created complications when being faced by multiple enemies on-screen, it was easy to become overpowered and frustrating to be knocked down over and over again.
With Toy Box Takeover these two issues have been addressed and are one of many examples of the types of gameplay metrics that unfortunately cannot be access with standard Toy Box creation tools.
What’s the story behind Toy Box Takeover?
The Incredible’s villain Syndrome get’s his hands on an Infinity Wand and begins using the tool to pull together Toy Box Worlds and various iconic villains that span across the Disney Infinity roster including Star Wars, Pixar, Modern & Classic Disney.
There have been new enemy variations created specifically for the Toy Box Takeover game, and you must destroy these enemies with the help of your sidekicks who help you fight & are also have stats which are upgradable.
The Toy Box games offer Avalanche a change to create structured gameplay which has no bounds, there are no limits beyond imagination and merging various franchises together in to one platform creates a truly exciting game.
